Evidence to date suggest that in the fall, small copepods (e.g. Pseudocalanus) seem to be the most important prey for larval fish, while in spring the eggs and nauplii of Calanus finmarchicus are dominant. Area distributions and production rates of Calanus eggs and nauplii have never been mapped on the Scotian Shelf, but their availability to larval fish probably depends on the abundance of females in the vicinity of a given bank and on the physical processes which transport the eggs and nauplii to its overlying waters. Zooplankton are supplied to Scotian Shelf waters from the Gulf of St. Lawrence via the Cabot Strait and are transported along the Nova Scotian Coast within the Nova Scotian Current (NSC). The NSC is one source mechanism supplying Scotia Shelf with zooplankton and subsequently seeding the shelf banks. The transport paths, timing and fluxes of zooplankton through the Cabot Strait and their dispersion paths throughout the Scotian Shelf will be characterized. Deep shelf basins which harbor overwintering zooplankton are another source mechanism supplying the shelf during late winter. Although the central shelf basins (Emerald and La Have) have been characterized - it is proposed to characterize the role of basins in the Eastern Scotian Shelf supplying zooplankton to the Banquereau and Western Banks. The role of retentive gyres in concentrating larval fish prey items (C. finmarchicus eggs and nauplii in spring and small copepods in fall) over the banks will be assessed and the relationships between larval feeding success, growth rate and food abundance will also be examined. Zooplankton were collected using vertical ring net hauls (0-100m) on all cruises. Egg production rates were measured for individual female Calanus finmarchicus in incubation experiments on cruises in 1997 only. Cruises on the Scotian Shelf and the Cabot Strait took place in April 1997-2000, Oct-Nov 1997-2000 and in the Labrador Sea May 1997, June 1998, and June 1999. For zooplankton collected using vertical ring net hauls (0-100m) the following parameters were studied: abundance of most important species; abundance of copepodite stages for Calanus finmarchicus, C. hyperboreus and C. glacialis; lengths-at-stage for Calanus spp. stages; dry weights-at-stage for Calanus spp. stages; total dry weights of samples for C. finmarchicus egg production experiments; number of eggs produced per female (24 hour incubation); spawning frequencies; clutch sizes; hatching success of eggs; female length, carbon and nitrogen content; female gonad maturity state.Two "target" species of copepod, Calanus finmarchicus and Pseudocalanus spp., were identified for special attention in this program, because of the importance of their eggs and early life stages in the nutrition of larval groundfish. This species overwinters at depth in a non-feeding, pre-adult phase and adults emerge from these overwintering stocks to reproduce in spring. Circulation models prior to the GLOBEC program suggested that the main influence on the Scotian Shelf was the Gulf of St. Lawrence, via the outflow through Cabot Strait and in the Nova Scotia Current (NSC): these were thought to be important source and supply routes for C. finmarchicus in spring. Circulation models developed during this program now suggest that while the outflow from the Gulf is indeed the major influence on the eastern Scotian Shelf and in the NSC, in late winter slope water intrudes on to the mid-central region of the shelf, where it mixes with the NSC and then advects to western regions. completed HEAD, DR.
